The WHO’s 2004 AnnualReview: General Director’s Report was presented at the 58th World Health Assembly, on May 25, 2005 in Geneva..

In assessing the job of the WHO in 2004, the report includes key events indicating the scope and diversity of actions carried out by the organization in all regions and countries.

One of the most notable issues of this year’s World Health Assembly was the approval of a new International Health Rules Book to handle international public health emergencies. The new norms aim to “prevent and protect against the spread of disease internationally, and provide a public health response.” The SARS outbreak in 2003 and more recent outbreaks of avian flu have called for new guidelines to define the role of each country and the WHO in detecting health emergencies and responding to them.
