Award winner of the 2002 Medical Literature Contest of the National Medical Academy of Mexico, the two-volume Tratado de Nefrología (Treatise on Nephrology), presents modern nephrology concepts using a holistic, integrative approach, a hallmark of the Cuban “school of nephrology.”
Published by Editorial Prado (Mexico) in 2003, 90 specialists contributed to the book’s 75 chapters, among them distinguished Cuban nephrologists including:
- Dr. Jorge Alfonso Guerra, Specialist in Internal Medicine and Nephrology, PhD and Full Professor of the Institute of Medical Sciences of Havana, President of the Cuban Nephrology Society;
- Dr. Raúl Herrera Valdés, Second Degree Specialist in Nephrology, PhD, Full Professor and Researcher, Director of the national Institute of Nephrology;
- Dr. Miguel Almaguer López, Specialist in Nephrology, Full Researcher and Associate Professor;
- Dr. Reynaldo Mañalich Lomas, Full Professor of Nephrology; and
- Dr. Charles Magrans Buch, PhD, Full Professor of Internal Medicine and Nephrology.
The editor, Dr. Alejandro Treviño Becerra, is a Surgeon, Professor Emeritus of the Mexican Academy of Surgery, and Full Professor of the Mexican Academy of Medicine. He says that he included Mexican colleagues (Dr. Felipe Mota and others), as well as renowned colleagues from Spain (Dr. Dámaso Sanz and others), Cuba and Puerto Rico, who proved to be “true experts in the topics and thorough and punctual collaborators.” The World Health Organization (WHO) recently published its Report on Health in the World 2005 – Make Every Mother and Child Count, where it argues that hundreds of millions of women and children do not have access to basic health services, causing millions of preventable deaths worldwide. According to the report, providing basic interventions and “continued assistance” for mothers and children - which start before pregnancy and continue through childbirth and childhood - the number of deaths could be drastically reduced.
According to this year’s report:
- Almost 11 million children under 5 will die, mostly from a handful of preventable causes.
- 4 million of these will die within 28 days of birth.
- 3.3 million babies will be stillborn.
- 500,000 women will die in pregnancy, during childbirth, or shortly afterwards .
Make Every Mother and Child Count was presented on April 7 - World Health Day . The report advocates a new plan to save mothers and children’s lives and is available at http://www.who.int/whr/2005/en/index.html
