MEDICC and Global Forum for Health Research Team Up for Special Issue of MEDICC Review
Oakland, California, October 5, 2009 – A special issue of MEDICC Review will carry papers and presentations from The Global Forum for Health Research 2009, to be held in Havana this November. Susan Jupp, Head of External Relations for the Forum and María Guadalupe Guzmán of Cuba’s Institute of Tropical Medicine, will serve as Guest Editors for the issue, to be released in July 2010. “Our aim is to showcase the social and technological innovations contributing to greater health equity, especially in developing countries,” said Gail Reed, MEDICC Review’s Executive Editor. To this end, she emphasized that the issue will carry original scientific and other articles by authors around the globe, prioritizing those from the Global South. MEDICC Review is one of several media partners for this year’s Global Forum. Others include the British Medical Journal, The Lancet, The New England Journal of Medicine and the Financial Times. The Forum’s theme this year is “Innovating for the Health of All”, covering critical health policy and research topics--from the generation of new ideas to their transformation into useful services, products, methods, management practices and policies, through to implementation. Health and related professionals are encouraged to register online for the Forum, slated for November 16-20 at Havana’s International Convention Center. Caveat for US participants: Full-time professionals in fields related to conference topics are eligible to travel to Cuba for the conference under the General License for professional travel. The Global Forum for Health Research (GFHR), headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, is an independent international organization committed to demonstrating the essential role of research and innovation for health and health equity, benefiting poor and marginalized populations. The organization has authored The 10/90 Report on Health Research, highlighting the disparities in the world’s research priorities.
